Deputy Abigail “Abby” Rose Bieber

Daughter. Sister. Friend. Deputy.

Deputy Abigail “Abby” Rose Bieber was born on March 14, 1991. She was a daughter, a sister and a friend — and part of a family in which all three Bieber children went on to work in law enforcement.

Abby moved to Florida in 2016. In 2018 she joined the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, where she worked primarily in patrol and also took part in undercover assignments.

Away from patrol, she worked with the Boys & Girls Club. The people who knew her describe someone who cared deeply about vulnerable people, and who saw the job as a way to look out for them.

Before she became the subject of Broken Badge, Abby was a young deputy building a career and a life — close to her family, loyal to her friends and committed to her community.

A glimpse of Abby beyond the story at the center of Broken Badge.

The invisible victim

The woman we don’t know yet

Somewhere, there is another woman whose story has not happened yet.

She may be an officer.

She may be married to one.

She may be dating one.

She may not recognize herself as being in danger. Her family may not see the warning signs. Her partner’s department may never have been trained to see them either.

We do not know her name.

That is the point.

Broken Badge exists so that we never have to learn it.

Training, intervention and clear policy can change what happens before another family reaches that point.
